The process of programmed cell death involving many processes ending in the controlled death of the cell in question. This process involves the shrinkage of the cell, fragmentation of the nucleus, loss of the cell membrane and many other steps. The main aim of apoptosis is to remove unneeded or unwanted cells in the organism without causing damage to the surrounding environment and recycling the salvagable components of that cell.
