SSRI's are used as to treat depression, anxiety disorders and some personality disorders. They increase the extracellular level of serotonin by inhibiting its reuptake. As a result, the serotonin stays in the synaptic gap longer than it normally would and may repeatedly stimulate the receptors of the recipient cell.
