Studies involving the "turning off" of certain genes to determine the function of those genes by observing the effects on the mice used. Usually by determining the function which has been lost in the 'knock-out' mice, the function of the gene in concern is found. Further study may haowever be necessary if it is determined that the proteins coded are involved in a long cascade of many proteins.
